A straight answer

What should a small business website have on it?

A short checklist. The basics a customer and a search engine both need, before any design: a secure connection, a layout set up for phones, a phone number that rings with one tap, an enquiry form a visitor can find, a page title and description that say what you do and where, business details written for search engines to read, a preview card for links shared on WhatsApp, and a sitemap.

None of them is clever and none is optional. A site missing three of them is not a bad design, it is an unfinished one, and the fixes are usually small. The comparison checks every one of these on your site and a competitor’s, and marks the one to fix first.

The check below looks for the enquiry form, which is the one most often missing from the home page of a trade’s site, and reports the rest alongside it.

For the customer
Secure, set up for phones, one tap to ring, a form to ask, a clear headline.
For the search engine
A title and description, business details as structured data, a sitemap.
For the share
A preview title and image, so a link passed on in a chat shows who you are.
